Two years in prison for ex-Skandia CEO

Lars-Eric Petersson, the former chief executive of Skandia sacked over his role in covering up the true cost of executive bonuses, has been sentenced to two years in prison.

The Stockholm District Court ruling found Petersson guilty of removing a cap on the so-called Wealthbuilder bonus programme offered to Skandia’s top executives. This was done without telling the board, a decision which cost the company an estimated £12m. The chief prosecutor in the case had argued the cost was closer to £13.5m, but this was not accepted by the court. The court also said Petersson could not be found guilty of charges he padded his pension to the tune of about £2.7m by unilaterally changing his pension contract with Skandia.
