Equitable Life victims 'treated worse than Gurkhas'

Equitable Life investors fighting for compensation say the UK Government is more interested in the settlement rights of Gurkhas than it is in their plight.

Peter Scawen, co-ordinator of the Equitable Life Trapped Annuitants (ELTA) action group, says a "swathe of sympathy" for Gurkhas does not appear to have been extended to victims of the insurer's near collapse in 2000. Scawen's comments follow fresh criticism for the Government from Parliamentary Ombudsman Ann Abraham this week. In her second report into its handling of the crisis, Abraham branded the Government's response to her initial findings of maladministration as "deeply disappointing".
