FTSE makes modest gains after RBS rights issue

In London, markets made modest gains despite further problems in the banking sector and the FTSE 100 added 35.8 (0.58%) to 6,251.8.

BT Group saw the biggest gains, adding 12.25 (5.49%) to 235p, while ICAP gained 30.5 (5.03%) to 637p. Royal Bank of Scotland lost 43.25 (13.55%) to 276p after revealing it would be paying a scrip dividend in 2008, while Thomas Cook dropped 13.75 (5.1%) to 255.75p. On Wall Street, markets climbed slightly in early trading but fears over the cooling economy persisted, with the Dow Jones adding 2.36 (0.02%) to 12,900.74. Hewlett Packard made the biggest gains, up 0.72 (1.58%) to $46.36, closely followed by General Motors, which added 0.3 (1.49%) to $20.49. Bank of America shares droppe...
