FTSE falls despite Scottish Power boost

The FTSE 100 has ended the day down 21.9 points, or 0.39%, to 5,597.4, despite early gains this morning.

Scottish Power and Carnival did its best to rally the index, although poor performances from Ladbrokes, Prudential and Schroders stopped the FTSE from making a full recovery. After a shaky start through a small decline in second quarter profits, Carnival ended the day up 1.97% to 2,117p, while Scottish Power topped the leaderboard with gains of 3.87% to 577.5p. Kazakhmys also performed well with gains of 3.47% to 1,043p, while Marks & Spencers also improved, jumping 3.34% to 573p, following a recommendation by Deutsche Bank.
