Technology to blame as HBOS takes more than its due

HBOS has blamed a "technical error" for incorrectly debiting the current accounts of around 7000 of its mortgage customers up to three times in as many days.

The error affects Bank of Scotland mortgage customers with the lender saying it realised the problem was occurring late on Tuesday. The “technical error” affects customers whose mortgage payments are usually taken on the 14th, 15th or 16th of the month by direct debit. Ross Kearny, a spokesman for HBOS, says the lender is working flat out to fix the problem and that it is in the process of returning the additional money withdrawn from customer accounts.
