FTSE up for third succesive day

The FTSE 100 Index has closed almost a percentage point high this afternoon, up 42.40 points at 4,776.90 for its third successive day of gains.

Hays, the recruitment firm, picked up 6.25p to 127.50p. Reuters was up 12.25p to 389p, adding to yesterday's gains. BT profited 6p to 199.25p after Britain's largest fixed-line phone company announced a 14% sales increase to £4.6bn in its fiscal second-quarter from a year earlier. stronger sales of broadband services helped the stock. MMO2, the former BT Cellnet mobile phone division, gained 3.25p to 107.50p. Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance lost 2.25p to 76.25 to lead the losers, even after reporting it narrowed its nine-month net loss to £163m, from a £208m loss in the same period ...
