Nokia nudges FTSE off course

Mobile phone maker Nokia shocked European markets today by failing to meet quarterly sales estimates, helping send the FTSE down 7.90 points to 4,472.80 by the close.

Sage led the FTSE tech brigade down, shedding 7.5p to 178p. Hays paid the price for being associated with mobile phone clients of its recruitment services, closing down 4p at 125.5p. Antagofasta, the Chile-based copper miner, dropped 36p to 1,044p after investors fretted about commodities suppliers boosting output beyond demand. Xstrata followed suit, down 24.5p to 719p. British Airways lost 5.75p to 298.25p after Australian carrier Quantas, in which it has a 19% stake, announced plans to launch a low-cost airline in Southeast Asia.
