Strong BSkyB results moves FTSE closer to 4800

The FTSE 100 closed up at its highest level in almost 2½ years by close of business on Friday, as the index ended just six points from the 4800 threshold.

BSkyB was the main contributor to the gains, as the FTSE 100 index earned 17 points or 0.4% to 4793.9 and climbed 1.1% on the week to its highest level since June 2002. BSkyB leapt 22p or 4.1% to 554p after announcing the pay TV company earned another 62,000 subscribers in the 3rd quarter to end of September 30th – substantially more than the 50,000 predicted. Its media rival ITV, the commercial TV network, also gained 3.75p or 3.4% to 113.25p while advertising giant WPP Group earned 6.5p or 1.1% to 587p.
