Living in UK costs 'at least £13,400' a year - study

A single person needs to earn just over £13,400 a year for a minimum standard of living in the UK, a study suggests.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) says its minimum income standard (MIS), which excludes mortgage and rent payments, is higher than some Government estimates. JRF, which spent two years compiling the report, says a UK couple with two children needs to spend £370 a week, while a pensioner couple needs £201. A single working-age adult needs a budget of £158 per week. The report calculated the benchmarks for acceptable costs of living by combining academic study with a consensus from 39 different groups of people.
