The FTSE 100 has failed to cross the 6,000 mark as it ended the day down 52.4 points, or 0.88%, to 5,929.3 as mining and energy stocks fell.
British Energy slipped 3.33% to 667p, closely followed by Cairn Energy which dropped 3.29% to £20.55, while BHP Billiton slipped 3.24% to £10.16 although Kazakhmys added 0.15% to end at £13.33. A poor start on Wall Street also limited gains, although Schroders was the biggest drag on the index with losses of 3.36% to 921p, while DSG International slipped 3.34% to 202.75p following a poor performance at its Italian operation. Elsewhere Reed Elsevier was the biggest riser with gains of 0.8% to 569p, while retailer Next rose slightly by 0.78% to £16.80, closely followed by PartyGaming whic...
