Virgin Money has highlighted the reality of living on the state pension, by revealing pensioners spend less per week on their shopping, than most people spend on dining out.
Based on figures from the Office of National Statistics, Virgin Money say pensioners in the 1.2 million households who depend on state pension benefits for at least three-quarters of their income, spend on average just £20.73 a week on food and non-alcoholic drinks. This is compared to the weekly amount of £27.41 spent at bars and restaurants by the average worker. The research also reveals pensioners also cut down on other goods and services, spending just over £130 a week on everything from food to fuel, and from clothing to health.
