FTSE ends flat as Wall Street falters

The FTSE 100 has ended the day pretty flat with a slight drop of 1.2 points, or 0.02%, to 6,148.1, after a positive start on Wall Street faded away.

Smith & Nephew posted the biggest gains with a rise of 3.64% to 505.5p, while life insurers Friends Provident and Resolution also picked up, with Friends Provident climbing 3.06% to 210.25p, while Resolution added 2.82% to 637p. British Energy gained 2.43% to 463p, closely followed by Experian which climbed 2.3% to 578p, although gains were limited by Tate & Lyle which fell 1.72% to 773p. Rexam was the biggest drag on the index with a fall of 4.42% to 552p, after warning of delays by customers, while British Airways fell 3.39% to 449.25p, and DSG International dropped 3.01% to 209.75p. ...
