The Department of Work and Pensions' Employers' Pension Provision survey 2003 released today paints a distinctly mixed picture of the state of workplace pension provision.
Only about half, or 52% of the 2002 private sector employers surveyed made any type of pension provision, the survey suggests. However, this average figure hides great differences between smaller and larger employers. Just 3% of small businesses provide occupational pensions while accounting for 9% of the employed population. 35% of firms surveyed reported access to Stakeholder pensions, but 75% of these also said they did not have any active Stakeholder members.
