Insurers and miners lead FTSE rally

The FTSE 100 has opened 33.4 points higher this morning, led by insurance and mining stocks. As of 8:30am, the index had risen 0.88% to 3,838.

The leading companies included Randgold Resources and Prudential. Gold mining company Randgold jumped 11.67% to 3,350p while the Pru was up 8.84% to 274p. Prudential has also announced it will replace chief executive Mark Tucker in October with current chief financial officer Tidjane Thiam. These companies were joined in the black by bus and rail company FirstGroup, which was up 7.05% to 24, and mining business Xstrata, which rose 4.99% to 400.
