FTSE closes week higher on miner rise

Once again the miners have bailed out London markets, with the sector's international giants driving the FTSE 100 into positive territory in afternoon trading. The index closed the week 59.90 points (1.05%) ahead to 5784.

Expectations of higher metal prices were the catalyst for strong result, with Antofagasta leading the pack, 6.25% higher to 722.50. Lonmin and Kazakhmys also performed strongly, up 4.98% to 3100 and 4.97% to 1247 respectively. Yesterday’s negative trading updates continued to plague Yell Group and Rolls-Royce, down 6.34% to 262 and 4.41% to 412 respectively. In New York, markets are mixed in early trading – the Dow Jones IA is currently lower despite the tech-strong Nasdaq index jumping out of the blocks.
