The FTSE 100 index gained 16.8 points or 0.28% to a four and a half year high of 5,863 points today, led by Schroders and oil companies.
Schroders was the top blue-chip gainer with a 3.8% rise to £11.72 as investors anticipate higher profits from the fund manager when it reports full-year results tomorrow. Oil prices jumped after Nigerian rebels bombed pipelines and a major tanker terminal over the weekend, knocking out nearly a fifth of supplies from the world's eighth-biggest crude exporter. BP added 1.9% to 668p, BG Group rose 1.6% to 686.5p and Royal Dutch Shell was up 0.7% at £18.07.
