FTSE continues to struggle

Stock market volatility around the world remains high, leaving investors wondering whether the storm of recent days has passed or not.

At 4:12pm UK time, the FTSE was down by 61.8 points, or 1%, to 6109.7. But this was a slight recovery - just 30 minutes before it was down 82.3 points, or 1.3%, to 6089.2. This performance was despite initial gains in early trading this morning. Big losses for Aviva, Lonmin, Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Group, among others, were not sufficiently offset by gains by The Royal Bank of Scotland and Sainsbury’s.
