British Energy pushes FTSE higher

The FTSE 100 has ended the day up 41.8 points, or 0.68%, to 6,150.4, following a recovery by British Energy.

Ending the day as the biggest gainer, British Energy climbed 5.33% to 474p, closely followed by hedge fund Man Group which added 4.62% to 481.25p, following reports it is considering demerging its brokerage arm. Experian was also up 3.84% to 581p, closely followed by Amvescap which climbed 3.3% to 611p, while miner Rio Tinto added 3.18% to £27.60, although gains were limited by Next which dropped 1.02% to £18.51. International Power was the biggest drag on the index with a fall of 1.97% to 335.25p as hopes of a bid from General Electric faded, while National Grid slipped 1.6% to 674.5...
