Prudential blazed a trail for insurers today on expectations of a favourable ruling on gender discrimination in providing cover, helping the FTSE touch above 4,700 before closing up 22.20 points at 4,681.80.
Pru gained 14p to 475.5p after European ministers agreed that insurance companies in the trading block should be given exemption from new law outlawing sex discrimination in provision of goods and services. Friends Provident followed, up 3.5p to 146.5p, with L&G up 2.5p to 105p. BAE Systems rose 7p to 238.5p after analysts again urged investors to be bold ahead of an expected signing for a second tranche of Eurofighter aircraft, which has been on hold because of partner government discussions about renegotiating the deal.
