Britains aged 65 and over will exceed 20% of the countries population by 2025, says the government.
As a result, London hosts a G8 summit today, led by secretary of state for Work and Pensions, Alan Johnson, to discuss the problems created by rapidly ageing populations, with a particular focus on increasing employment rates for older workers. Other G8 countries face similar issues of an increase in the ageing population including an increase from 20% to 29% of over 65s in Japan, 19% to 24% in Germany, and from close to 17% to nearly 23% in France.
