A leading charity organisation for pensioners has branded Gordon Brown's Budget speech a bribe for the elderly.
Help the Aged says that Governments one-off payment offerings including Winter Fuel Payments and a £200 Council Tax rebate, while valuable, do little to build self-esteem and confidence in the older population. Mervyn Kohler, head of public affairs at Help the Aged, says that a brave Budget would identify a need for an urgent reform in the current pensions system, currently called for by employers, trade unions, voluntary organisations and the financial services industry.
