Heseltine hollers against industry associations

One-time deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine has berated industry associations across all sectors of the economy for failing to be persuasive in arguments with government and government departments.

Giving the 12th annual Marketor’s City Lecture, the current president of the Chartered Institute of Marketers has said his time at the DTI in the then role of President of the Board of Trade often put him and his officials in touch with associations. However, the professionalism question was constantly raised because of the common practice of “bowing to the creaking wheel” of business interests wherein the lowest common denominator approach would be taken and members accepted even though it was clear their businesses were not up to scratch.
