News of a strong morning on Wall Street has regained a little late ground for the FTSE 100, but the index still closed the day down 17.3 points, or 0.26%, to 6590.6.
Anglo American – trading without its packaging arm Mondi – was the day’s big mover; the mining giant was up 166 points, or 5.64%, to 3111. Lonmin also enjoyed a positive day, climbing 159 points, or 3.96%, to 4179. ICAP (Ord) suffered the largest loss, it fell 14.5 points, or 2.94%, to 479.5. On the first day of trading after England’s public smoking ban, the Imperial Tobacco Group took a hit, losing 57 points, or 2.47%, to 2250. In New York, the Dow Jones is alive with M&A activity in early trading, up 90.8 points, or 0.68%, to 13499.42. Caterpillar is having a strong start, up 1.98 ...
