FTSE holds as PartyGaming loses its shirt

The FTSE 100 index ended just short of flat at 5,792.30 points by close of business on Tuesday as PartyGaming racked up losses on fears about possible legislation in the US.

PartyGaming fell 3.89% to 123.5p as investors sold out as talk is gaining momentum of anti-internet gambling legislation in the US. US light crude for March delivery is currently down 88 cents at $60.36 a barrel as supply concerns recede further and this news led BP down 0.54% to 643p, Shell down 0.64% to 1,868p and BG 2.73% lower at 658.5p. Sugar group Tate & Lyle attempted to assuage fears today a new sweetener, known as Altern, will impact on sales of its own Splenda product, but the shares still tumbled 2% to 604p.
