FTSE finishes week well

In the UK the FTSE 100 index of leading shares rose to seal a small weekly gain on Friday closing up 18.5 points at 5,359.30, with hedge fund manager Man Group taking the lead among blue-chips after two broker upgrades, while publisher Emap rose after an upbeat analyst meeting.

Executives from the media group met with Morgan Stanley and made upbeat comments on its UK magazine and radio operations, the bank said. Emap shares rose 2%. Friends Provident was another top mover, up 1.6% as investors anticipated a jump in profits from the insurer when it reports interim results next week. Despite some strong gainers, over a third of the market ended lower, including a 1.7% fall for gas and electricity provider Centrica after it said full-year earnings would be hit by volatile energy prices and announced price hikes for customers.
