Tech stocks push FTSE higher

Confirmed multi-billion dollar orders for telecoms technology in the US flowed through to Europe this afternoon, helping push the FTSE 100 index up 18.20 points to 4,486.70 by the close.

British American Tobacco added 59.5p to 883p after US competition regulators studying the merger of its subsidiary there, Brown & Williamson, with RJ Reynolds stated they would not investigate the deal further. ITV added 3p to 113p after announcing a 5% rise in first-half advertising sales. 3i, the listed venture capitalise, gained 16p to 616p after losing the battle to take over the Telegraph Group. Vodafone ended down 1p at 121.75p after the departure of the chief executive of its Japanese operations. The FTSE 250 index advanced 25.2 points to 6,188.2. Cairn Energy led the ...
