Romantics who popped the question to their loved ones yesterday may not be aware of the additional stamp duty charge they could face in the future, says Bradford & Bingley.

According to data presented by the mortgage lender, clients who already own a property may not be aware adding a new name to the mortgage and property deeds will in fact spark an additional stamp duty charge and, worse, could force the original mortgage status to be reassessed. Anyone looking to add their partner’s name to their property and take equal responsibility will in fact be creating an additional stamp duty land tax charge worth 50% of the total normal mortgage amount, along with the extra lender charges such as ‘deed of variation’ and possible reassessment of the mortgage itsel...
