It is not every fund manager who can claim to have predicted the catastrophic demise of the Irish banks in the financial crisis. For Paul O'Connor, head of the UK-based multi-asset asset team at Janus Henderson Investors, it was one of his best and most insightful pieces of research - however, it was also a salutary early lesson in how great research does not automatically ensure a great trade. O'Connor shorted the Irish banks six months before the crash but, having enacted the trade too early, it haemorrhaged money - while everyone else was participating in the last leg of the bull mark...
