It is not every fund manager who can claim to have predicted the catastrophic demise of the Irish banks in the financial crisis. For Paul O'Connor, head of the UK-based multi-asset asset team at Janus Henderson Investors, it was one of his best and most insightful pieces of research - however, it was also a salutary early lesson in how great research does not automatically ensure a great trade.
