It is time that businesses started taking cyber threats seriously, warns Stewart James, partner at DLA Piper.

Governments across the world are considering and working towards the creation of new laws relating to cybercrime. The UK has the Computer Misuse Act 1990, which has been updated on a number of occasions to deal with the increasing nature of the threat. However, changes in the law are generally slow to develop and implement, and frequently get left behind in a rapidly evolving environment. Additionally, in practice, the law does not work to deter cybercriminals. It is a function of criminal activity to operate outside of the law, a fact that is also facilitated by the jurisdictional limit...
