Charlotte Richards talks to Richard Plackett, co-manager of the BlackRock UK Special Situations fund, about the appeal of small and mid-cap investing.

What is your investment strategy? The fund is exposed to the whole UK stock market but has a large emphasis on small and mid-caps. We are believers in small and mid-cap investing for two reasons. Historically, their shares significantly outperform over the long term for reasons well based in investment theory; for example, smaller companies grow faster than larger companies. We think it is sensible to have most of our fund in the part of the market that outperforms.
