Nicky Morgan elected as chair of Treasury committee

Succeeds Andrew Tyrie

Conservative MP for Loughborough Nicky Morgan has been elected as the new chair of the Treasury committee after beating Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Speaker has announced.

Morgan was elected by MPs across all parties and will formally take up the position when the remaining members of the committee have been appointed by the House. The former education secretary will take over from Andrew Tyrie, who did not to stand for re-election in the June general election after serving 20 years in the House of Commons. Morgan, who qualified as a lawyer, became an MP in 2010 and rose to the cabinet position of minister for women and equalities in 2013. She replaced Michael Gove as education secretary in 2014 before being ousted for Justine Greening.
