HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has come under scrutiny for issuing fines of up to £3,000 to families who file inheritance tax (IHT) returns late. This has raised concerns for many people - especially those dealing with the complexities of estate management. The responsibility to deal with the IHT return falls on either the executors named under the will of the deceased, or in the absence of a will the administrators who assume the role under the rule of intestacy.
