Having all the wisdom and knowledge that staying invested for the long term is the best decision is all well and good, writes Chartered financial planner Garry Mackay, but that didn't stop biases and fears creeping in and worrying him during the market turbulence of 2020...

I have a confession to make: I'm not a robo-adviser. I am a human being. This means I have a cornucopia of cognitive biases, blind spots and emotional baggage. Neither am I the poster boy for the assumption that people behave rationally to maximise their best interests. I'm more of a follower of Ava Gardner when she wrote: "God knows I've got so many frailties myself, I ought to be able to understand and forgive them in others." As a Chartered financial planner, my role is to understand what my clients wish to accomplish and create financial plans, aligned to their specific objectives...
