A month or so into the New Year and it feels as though markets are stuck in a holding pattern as we await the solutions to two key problems - the ongoing trade war between China and the US and the countdown to the UK leaving the European Union on 29 March. Indeed, the end of the first of quarter of this year looks likely to be a seminal moment for markets - the 90-day truce declared between US president Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping ends on 1 March.
