Multi-asset funds cannot be compared on simple performance and risk metrics alone, argues Andrew Morris, with much greater due diligence required on the part of advisers to ensure they are picking suitable funds for their clients

Having looked broadly at multi-asset investment risk last month, it next seemed valuable to drill down into a regularly discussed topic among advisers today - namely, how can you usefully compare multi-asset funds? When researching single region equity funds, of course, it is much simpler to compare different portfolios in a standard way. If, for example, you wished to increase your large-cap UK equity exposure, you could take the IA UK All Companies sector as a starting point and then screen out all the funds that had less than a certain percentage in large-cap stocks.
