Fund industry needs to evolve

If the asset management industry is to see sales flows head upwards once more, writes Mike Barrett, it needs to start creating products clients can understand - especially where income is being drawn down in retirement

The latest Annual Asset Management Survey from the Investment Association (IA) is, as usual, a treasure trove of interesting analysis and market trends. For starters, total assets under management for the trade body's members is now an eye-watering £5.7 trillion - that's 12 zeros don't you know. Assets managed in UK authorised funds rose 4% over the last year - to £872bn. Taking into account outsourcing activities, more than 90,000 people work in asset management so it is clear the industry supports a significant number of jobs in all regions of the UK.
