The scandal is not the fact that 20,000 people are selling their homes to fund their care, it is the fact that so many people then run out of funds because they fail to get appropriate financial advice, and fall back on the state. Last year out of the 53,000 self funders who went into care only 7,000 received appropriate financial advice. We estimate that this will cost local authorities nearly £1 billion in England alone each year. We also believe that politicians are out of touch with the majority of over 50 year olds on this issue.
