I was saddened to read of the death of the French cyclist and sporting icon Laurent Fignon. Having been a keen follower of the Tour de France (always known in our household as “The Turd of France”, as coined inadvertently by my infant son in the 90s, who misheard perennial commentator Phil Liggett) I knew Fignon as an outspoken, charismatic French sportsman in the mould of a Cantona, or a Jean-Pierre Rives.
