I had an interesting reality check over the New Year as I had a look at a very different economic culture through a late holiday to Cuba with a couple of friends.
Greeted by the welcome hoarding of “Socialism or Death” as we stepped off the plane felt a little extreme, but it did set the tone for a break which constantly reminded me we take for granted the financial advantages the West has. But we perhaps also pay heavily for them too. While Cuban city life seems to be an eclectic mix of ‘mañana’ and salsa vibrance, the lives people generally lead are not so privileged because everything is owned by the State.
