More than three-quarters (76%) of people aged between 55 and 64 have already taken their tax-free pension lump sum, according to AJ Bell research.
The stark figure could indicate that concerns over tax changes are having a significant impact on the behaviour of savers, AJ Bell noted. The survey of 1,000 retirees between 26 August and 1 September 2026 also found that only 41% of people felt they have managed their pension well so far, while 38% of people said they had not. AJ Bell head of personal finance Sarah Coles said the government's upcoming Budget could "exacerbate" short-term behaviour on the part of this age group.
