Multi-billion pound divorce claim could be heard in UK courts

The Court of Appeal has unanimously ruled in favour of allowing a long-running high net-worth (HNW) divorce case concerning one of Russia’s wealthiest couples to be brought to court in the UK.

Potanina v Potanin has been running for almost seven years, with Russian courts granting the wife, Natalia Potanina, a fraction of what she might have received had the case been heard in this country, with one lawyer saying the total at stake could be "in the billions not millions". The Court of Appeal has today (4 September), granted her application for leave to bring a Part III claim - meaning she is permitted to bring a claim for financial remedies in the UK following a divorce and financial settlement decided after a long marriage in Russia, law firm Kingsley Napley explained.
