SJP told to compensate man over charges breakdown failings

Information sought amid client’s ongoing advice provision concerns

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has ordered St James’s Place (SJP) to pay £300 in compensation to a man who it failed to supply with a clear fee and charges breakdown.

In November 2022, the individual, named as Mr S, sought information on what service charges he had paid since 2010. SJP sent a "very large document" in response and directed him to his SJP partner for adviser charge information, according to the FOS final decision. When Mr S attempted to get this information from his adviser, it was not forthcoming. In May 2023, he went on to make a data subject access request (DSAR) seeking an itemised breakdown of all charges levied for all services provided by SJP since he had opened his retirement account.
