Reeves defends yearly Budget to avoid 'constant chopping and changing'

Treasury Committee scrutinises chancellor on Spring Statement

In a session of scrutiny from the Treasury Committee, Chancellor Rachel Reeves defended the government's move to deliver only one Budget a year, as well as tackling the role of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) and addressed leak concerns.

In an evidence session held by the Treasury Committee today (2 April), Reeves was scrutinised on her Spring Statement delivered last week (26 March). When questioned on an alleged leak of OBR forecast on 11 February and further information that was revealed ahead of her Spring Statement on the welfare figures, Reeves and the Treasury both addressed the huge amount of speculation that comes with a Budget or Statement.
