Investor confidence in UK stockmarket plummets to 23-year low

Lowest measure since index launched in 1995

The Hargreaves Lansdown Investor Confidence index shows sentiment towards the UK fell to a record low in October, with ongoing Brexit concerns exacerbated by an early Budget and the fall in markets earlier this month.

The index fell five points to 53 in October, its lowest measure of sentiment towards the UK stockmarket since it launched in 1995. The average reading of the UK market over the last 12 months has been 69, while over the last ten years is 92. Laith Khalaf, senior analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said Brexit remained the key concern for investors with many highlighting the uncertainty it had brought to the market.
