The Chinese government has vowed retaliation in response to planned trade tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese goods, announced by US President Donald Trump on Monday, as two of the world's largest economies take a step closer to a full-blown trade war.

Beijing's Ministry of Commerce in Beijing said Trump's plans represented "extreme pressure and blackmail," and it would retaliate with countermeasures, according to Bloomberg. A statement from the ministry on Tuesday (19 June) said: "If the US loses its senses and publishes such a list, China will have to take comprehensive quantitative and qualitative measures and retaliate forcefully." Trump ordered his staff to draft plans for the new tariffs in response to previous threats from China, which were in retaliation to his initial suite of planned tariffs against imports from the countr...
