The proportion of those aged 85 and above is set to double over the next 25 years from 1.6 million in 2016 to 3.2 million in 2041, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

In 2016 there were approximately 136,500 men aged 85. By 2041, this is expected to rise to 258,000. It is a similar story for women, who benefit from slightly longer life spans. According to the ONS, in 2016 there were around 179,600 women aged 85. This is set to increase to 303,800 by 2041. More broadly, the ONS found in mid-2016 there were 1.6 million people aged 85 and over; by mid-2041 this is projected to double to 3.2 million.
