Govt defeated by Lords on cold calling ban

The government was defeated in the House of Lords last night as peers demanded a ban on cold calling be included in the upcoming Financial Guidance and Claims Bill.

The House of Lords backed a cross-party amendment calling for pension cold calls to be banned by 253 voted to 205. The government had argued the move was outside the scope of the Bill being debated. The amendment means the new guidance body - The Pensions Advisory Service, Pension Wise and the Money Advice Service merged as one - will publish an annual assessment of consumer detriment as a result of cold calling, and advise the relevant secretary of state of any areas where it sees a ban on cold calling could be beneficial.
