The Legal Ombudsman is to consult on establishing a scheme which would give consumers a new avenue to challenge will-writers.
It said there is interest in a voluntary scheme which would be based on an EU directive on ‘alternative dispute resolutions' - an initiative allowing consumers to resolve disputes out-of-court in a fast, low-cost manner. It follows a decision earlier this year by the Lord Chancellor Chris Grayling to reject a proposal to amend the list of reserved activities to include will-writing. The Legal Ombudsman said it supported the suggestion by the Legal Services Board and, though it was turned down, it would back the government's implementation of the EU directive.
