Young women drive increase in savings

Britons have increased the amount they are saving, and the best savers are young women, according to a quarterly savings survey released today.

The survey, from NS&I's, indicated that Britons are now saving 7.17% of their income each month - up from 7.08% in the previous quarter when savings reached their lowest level in over a year. Savers aged between 25 and 34 are putting away significantly more than the national average, at about 8% of their income each month. This means £103 in real terms, and is a rise from 7.24% in the previous quarter. Women in this age group are also leading the way when it comes to setting aside savings each month.
