HSBC system crash causes consumer outrage

HSBC has admitted a nationwide systems crash may have affected thousands of customers.

A spokesperson for the bank said all online accounts had been frozen, along with many ATMs, and apologised for the inconvenience, "especially on a Friday". Consumers reported that debit cards were also out of action. The press office tweeted just after 16:30: "Problem is being worked on urgently. As soon as we know how long this issue will last, will let you know. Sorry - thanks for patience #HSBC" The bank said systems would be back up after a few hours, though users had reported problems as early as 11am.
